FEATHERSTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT KAHUTARA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The.-monthly meeting of the Kahutara Women’s Institute was held in "the Kahutara hall, Mrs Elbe presiding over a fair attendance. The resignation of Mrs Corlet, who is leaving the district, was received with regret. Apologies were received from Mesdames Sinclair, T. Hood, Welch and Henderson. Four parcels were packed ready for dispatch to local soldiers overseas. The competitions resulted: Ginger nuts suitable for sending overseas: Mrs Elbe 1, Mrs Pope 2; best bloom, Mrs Cade 1, Mrs Pope 2. The thought for the day was given by Mrs McKenna. Mrs McKenna read two letters from her son, a sergeant-gunner in the N.Z.R.A.F., describing the trip across the Atlantic in the convoy. The hostesses were Mesdames Pottinger, Cade and Miss Corlet. A pleasant time was spent at the home of Miss Card yesterday when Miss Eileen Chalmers, who is to be married next week, was the guest of honour at a “gift tea.” In the euchre tournament the prize winners were Mesdames L. Benton and A. Donald. Afternoon tea was served and then Miss Chalmers was called upon to open the many gift .parcels for which she suitably replied. Miss Card referred to the esteem in which Miss Chalmers was held.

Euchre Party.

A ‘euchre party was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday and was well attended. The card winners .were Mrs N. Taylor and Mr J. Cross.

The competition winners were: — Sponge (donated by Mrs F. O'Neale), Mr Cameron; pillow slips (donated by Mrs Siru), Mrs Lonie; Christmas cake (donated by Mrs Cole), Dorothy Raper. This was the final card party held to raise funds for the Home of Compassion and a cheque for £2l 0s 6d will be forwarded to the Home.

Engagement.

The engagement is announced of Effie, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs William Johnson, Featherston, and Maurice, youngest son of Mrs and the late Martin Johnson, Carterton.
