TEMPERANCE ORATORY
MASTERTON COMPETITION.
PRIZEWINNERS ANNOUNCED.
The appreciative audience which attended the recent Temperance Oratory contest held in the Methodist Hall were privileged to hear oratory of a high standard. The judges, the Revs. D. McNeur and J. Dickie in congratulating the prizewinners on the fluency of their speech, and purity of their dictation, expressed the hope that this event in the future would attract even a larger number of competitors. The results were: Master Jack Bailey (subject, “John B. Gough"), 1; Miss Irene Shoosmith (“T. E. Taylor"), 2. Both these competitors are pupils of the Wairarapa College. The value of the .first prize is £2 2s. The cash prizes were provided under a bequest by the late Rev. James Cocker, who will long be remembered as a champion of Temperance Reform. Miss Audry Burch, a prospective candidate for the position of Methodist Deaoness, ably addressed the gathering in the interests of her candidature. The Rev. J. S. Kings occupied the chair.
