COUNTY AFFAIRS

MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL REPAIRS TO MANGAREI ROAD. SERVICES OF EMPLOYEE APPRECIATED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday afternoon. The chairman, Mr E. W. Cheetham, presided, and there were also present Councillors D. Bennett, A. Forsberg, A. Gray, J. H. MacDonald and O. Welch. The treasurer’s report, which showed a credit balance of £1824 10s Bd, was adopted. Accounts amounting to £674 2s 7d were passed for payment. It was resolved that steps be taken to apply for the sanction of the Local Bodies Loans Board to the raising of the requisite loan to provide the council’s proportion, of the cost' of reconstructing the bridge known as the Hastwell Cemetery bridge on Highway No. 443. The clerk reported that a satisfactory sale had been made of certain second-hand bridge timber. The chairman reported that definite arrangements had been made for the repairs to the Mangarei Road to be commenced towards the end of the month. The clerk, reported that he had issued, during the month, a building permit, covering alterations and additions to a residence at an estimated cost of £.531. His action was confirmed. The Traffic Inspector (Mr W. G. Milne) reported that the conduct of traffic on county roads had proved satisfactory during the month. A letter was received from the Public Works Department dealing with tiie Main Highway estimates for 194142. The estimates covered ordinary maintenance work, construction of bridges and flood damage restoration'. It was reported to the council that Mr K. A. Larsen, an employee of the council, was to enter camp for overseas service at an early date. The clerk was instructed to convey to Mr Larsen the council’s appreciation of the faithful services that he had rendered during his term of employment with the council. The county overseer, Mr C. Seymour, reported that satisfactory progress had been made with county work since last month. Prospective work was discussed and arranged for.
