PIRINOA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) Mrs Atkinson (vice-president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Pirinoa Women’s Institute when there was a fair attendance of members. After the business of the meeting had been completed, the members prepared and packed parcels for sending overseas for the soldiers from this district. The competition for the best sponge cake was won by Mrs H. Gaudin with Mrs Spicer second. Mrs Gaudin also won the competition for the best bloom, Miss Scrimgeour being second. A junior competition (a knitted helmet for a soldier) was won by Miss N. Mclntosh. The hostesses were Mesdames Lovegrove and Swainson. Personal Items. Mrs M. Thompson is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital. Mrs J. Riwai, who underwent an operation recently in the Greytown Hospital, is progressing favourably towards recovery. Mr S. Thomas has resumed his duties at the local Post Office. Mr Scales, who was relieving Mr Thomas, has returned to Wellington. There are four of the sons of the late Mr W. Hume serving overseas and Mr Noel Hume,’who went into camp last week is the fifth member of the family to enter camp. Mr and Mrs Hawkins have returned to Pirinoa after having resided on the East Coast for some months. Messrs T. Te Maari and M. Te Whaiti have left for Taihape. Long Night Dance. Lovers of dancing are reminded of the long night dance to be held in the Memorial Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) evening. Mr T. Udy’s Orchestra will provide the musip. The proceeds will be donated to the Y.W.C.A., Wellington, for providing refreshments for soldiers on leave at weekends. The committee will be grateful for donations, etc., and these may be forwarded to Miss Scrimgeour, Tauanui.
