LAWN TENNIS

ST MATTHEW’S CLUB OPENS SEASON. The official opening of the season by the St. Matthew’s Tennis Club took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. There was a good attendance of members and supporters. The club’s president, the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich, declared the season opened and hit the first ball over the net. An apology for absence was received, amongst others, from Mrs Rich. A Yankee tournament was held and proved most enjoyable. In an interesting final Mrs G. Challis and Mr T. McCormack beat Miss J. Watkins and Mr 11. Filer. 21-20. The club captain. Mr Ken. Chapman, presented the prizes to the winning pair. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies’ committee.
