ARMING OF SHIPS

IN PROGRESS IN UNITED STATES WARNING CONVEYED TO NAZIS. RIGHT OF SELF-DEFENCE. (Ey Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, October 5. Following- the sinking of the I. C. White, the Maritime Commission announces that 20 out of 125 merchantmen which are supplying Britain have been armed, and guns will be mounted on the remainder shortly. Simultaneously, the Secretary of State, Mr Hull, warned the Nazis that henceforth the United States will regard the right of self-defence as transcending international law.

The I. C. White, a tanker, was an American-owned ship, registered in Panama. Presumably the ships to be armed are in the same category.
