FEATHERSTON

NO SHOW THIS YEAR HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S DECISION. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Featherston Horticultural Society was held in the Red Cross Society’s rooms yesterday afternoon, Mr A. C. Pearce presiding. Also present were Mesdames Arch Clark, H. Lawson, H. Bloxam, Hunter, Charles, Lowell, Carlyon, Miss Viles, Mr H. Clark and the Rev. R. S. Keenan. Apologies for absence were received from Mr and Mrs C. Carter, Mesdames E. M. Wakely, Luke Smith, and Miss J. Matthews. After a discussion it was decided not to hold the show this year owing to the -Anzac Hall not being available. The meeting endorsed Mr Pearce’s action in having the society's property removed from Anzac Hall and stored. The- annual meeting is to be held in July, 1942. A committee consisting ol Mesdames Arch Clark, Lawson, Miss Wilkinson and Mr Pearce was appointed to arrange the date. Personal. Mrs J. A. Juno, who recently underwent an operation in the Greytown hospital, is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Lambing Percentages. Notwithstanding the bad weather experienced during the lambing time which resulted in heavy mortality the percentages this season are above the average. The Late Mr K. N. Say well. Mr Kenneth Nelson Saywell, of Papatahi, Western Lake, who died recently, was born at Matarawa 53 years ago, and was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs William Saywell, pioneer Wairarapa settlers. After spending his early manhood m Matarawa, he entered the employment of the late Mr Harold Matthews at Papatahi, 28 years -ago. He married Miss Agnes Murdock, Roxburgh (Scotland). He acquired a portion of Papatahi station which he successfully farmed up to the date of his death, being engaged in sheep breeding and dairying.. He was formerly a member of the Papatahi school committee, a prominent rifleman and deerstalker and took an active part in the welfare and social activities of the district. For over 30 years he was a member of the Odd Fellows’ Lodge, Carterton. The deceased is survived by his widow, three sons and one daughter. Mr W. A. Saywell, of Greytown, is a brother.
