GOLF CLUB LADIES’ COMPETITION. (“Times-Age” Special.) On Saturday a consolation medal round in conjunction with an L.G.U. medal competition will be played by the lady members of the Greytown Golf Club. The draw is as follows:— Mrs Gregor v. Miss M. Bridge Party. The fortnightly bridge party of the Plunket Society was held on Tuesday afternoon. The winners were Mrs R. Vile (auction), and Miss Isobel Wiggins (contract). Personal. The Rev. C. H. and Mrs, Isaacson, of Khandallah, are spending a few days in Greytown and are the guests of Mi and Mrs F. Wood, West Street. Home Guard. The Headquarters Company of the South Wairarapa Home Guard Battalion paraded at Greytown last evening. The motor cycle unit carried out patrol exercises and the engineers were instructed in the use of smoke screens and road blocks. The Mounted Rifles programme consisted of guard mounting and patrols. accident she was only tested once but nevertheless she is listed as “excellent in the Canadian Advance Register. Mr Knutson is the third Wairarapa breeder to make an importation from the famous ,Colony Farms. Personal Items. The funeral of the late Mr Percy Ashton yesterday was largely attended and included fifty members of Totara Lodge of Druids, of whom deceased was a valued member. A short service was held at the residence by the Rev W. F. Stent, Vicar of St Mark’s Anglican Church, who also officiated at the graveside. The Druids’ funeral service was carried out by P.A. Bro W. Fryer. The pall-bearers were P.D.P. Bro A. E. Reid (who also represented the Belvedere Dairy Company), P.D.P. Bro P. J. Reid, P.D.P. Bro Hector Bassett, P.A. Bro K. H. Reid, P.A. Bro F. Taplin and Bro A. E. Goodin. Many beautiful wreaths were received.
Mr and Mrs A. Cave, of Shannon, were visitors to Carterton yesterday. The funeral of the late Mr John Jeffrey Taucher took place at the Clareville Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The cortege included over fifty motor cars. A short service was conducted at the residence by the Rev W. J. Couling of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, who afterwards carried out the ceremony at the graveside. The Manchester Unity Order of Odd Fellows’ service was taken by P.D.G.M. Bro C. J. de Lacey. There were two sets of pall-bearers. Those acting from the house to the hearse were: Aircraftman Stan Hall, Messrs . Ray Hall and Dick Hall (brothers-in-law), R. F. Taucher (brother), A. E. Hickling and Laurie Jeffreys (step-brothers), and those at the graveside Bros H. J. Rathbone (N.G.), R. P. Wakelin, C. E. Cook and Gordon Udy and Messrs F. Knutson and J. H. Churchouse (representing Messrs Booth and Co., where deceased was employed to the time of his death). Among others, wreaths were sent by . the Carterton and Wellington staffs of Messrs Booth & Co., the Carterton Home Guard, the Carterton . Football Club, the Carterton Fire Brigade and the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. Fire Brigade Meeting. Superintendent R. P. Wakelin presided over a meeting of the Carterton Fire Brigade held at the fire station last evening. A vote of condolence was passed with the widow and relatives of the late Fireman J. J. Taucher. The superintendent gave a very interesting lecture on E.P.S. work. Parkvale Hall Dance. Another of the popular Parkvale dances will be held in the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening. Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra will provide the music. Supper will be supplied and novelty dances will be on the programme. Soldiers' Gift Parcel Dance. On Saturday, October 11, the Clareville Social Hall Committee will hold a gift parcel dance to provide Christmas parcels for the soldiers overseas. There will be novelty dances on the programme. As the function is for a worthy object there should be a large attendance. Fishing Season. Yesterday was not very favourable for the opening day of the fishing season in Carterton. Several anglers of the town tried their luck in various streams and only one or two fish were landed. The scarcity of fish is attributed to the recent floods in the riv’ers.
