/ENJOYABLE GATHERING MR AND MRS GEORGE AND STAFF ■ ENTERTAINED. ("Times- Age” Special.) An enjoyable gathering arranged by r Mr H. Mortenson and several mem- r bers of the Carterton Racing Club was f held in the Masonic Hall last night ( when Mr and Mrs T. R. George and j the training staff were the guests of v honour. The gathering was a repre- j sentative one, and was presided over by Mr W. Howard Booth, president of j the Racing Club. . 1 The chairman said the gathering had been arranged in honour of Mr George who had come to Carterton to winter c ' and train his team of horses at Clare- j ville. It was due to the efforts of Mr Mortenson that this had been brought about. The idea was a good one and had undoubtedly resulted in a success- j ful and very enjoyable race meeting. , Everyone knew Mr George as a suecessful trainer and held him in high esteem for his many personal qualities. Mr George had expressed his satisfaction with the course conditions and the recent race meetings had j proved the value he had derived from j training his horses at Clareville. He £ hoped that Mr George would be back at Clareville again next year. Mr and Mrs George’s health was then toasted with enthusiasm and they f were accorded musical-honours. t 'Mr George thanked Mr Booth and i the stewards of the Carterton Racing j Club for having given him the oppor- \ • tunity to come to Carterton to winter s and train his horses. He had enjoyed ] his stay in Carterton and he knew his i staff had also. He had gained numerous friends and had received many kindnesses from the club’s secretary , and stewards. He was well satisfied ‘ with the facilities afforded him for j training his horses. He stated that he . intended to come back to Clareville ‘ next winter, all going well. He thanked them for the honour extended to j Mrs George and himself. , Other toasts were: “The Press,” pro- . posed by Mr Geo E. Allen and replied , to by Messrs C. J. de Lacey and O. I Scott; “Our Entertainers” (including ; Misses V. Sorensen and V. Irwin), pro- , posed by Mr S. J. Newland, responded ; to by Mr Price, of Master ton. During the evening the following concert programme was rendered, , every item being encored:. Song, Mr Goulden; sketches by members of the Masterton Savage Club; songs, Mr D. Irwin; songs, Mr A. Kay; pianoforte i duet, Misses V. Sorensen and V. Irwin;,' pianoforte solo, Miss Irwin; sleight of i“ hand tricks, Mr W. Moroney. Misses / Sorensen, and Irwin played accompaniments. CARTERTON TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. The president, Mr R. W. Roydhouse, presided over a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Carterton Tennis Club held in the bowling pavilion last evening. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. Nine new members were elected. The election of officers resulted as ' under:—President, Mr R. W. Roydhouse; club captain, Mr M. W. Worsfold; lady’s captain, Miss Newbould; secretary, Miss M. Smart; junior captain, Mr A. D. Taylor; ladies’ secretary, Miss Newbould; green committee, Mr M. W. Worsfold; general committee, Messrs W. Vaughan, D. Mills, D. L. Taverner, Mrs Taplin, Miss Peters; delegate to W.L.T.A., Mr D. L. Taverner; hon. auditor, Mr E. Dyer. It was resolved that the subscrip7, tions be the same as last year. The official opening of courts will take place on Saturday, November 1. CARRINGTON TENNIS CLUB GOES INTO RECESS. The annual meeting of the Carrington Lawn Tennis Club was held last evening, Mr W. Vaughan presiding. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. A discussion took place in connection with the club functioning successfully this year, owing to severa 1 ! members having left the district and others being with the armed forces overseas. It was decided that the club go into recess for the duration of the war, or until sufficient inducement was forthcoming to warrant the commencement of operations. There is a credit balance in the club’s fund and it was rel solved to invest this in trustees for .<£uture use. > Votes of thanks were accorded to the secretary and officers. FRIESIAN BULL IMPORTED FROM CANADA. Mr C. A. Knutson, Dalefield, has imported through Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., .an exceptionally wellbred Friesian bull from, the world famous Colony Farms at Essendale, British Columbia. It was personally selected by Mr P. Moore, who was awarded the title of Master Breeder by the American Holstein-Friesian Association. Colony Grebegga Koba Sir Heilo, the bull selected-for Mr Knutson, was calved on March 22, 1940. He is a big bull, with true lines, great depth, splendid bone and an exceptionally good handling skin, a splendid head and eye, and the balance expected in a bull of show-ring calibre. Hazelwood Heilo Sir Bessie, the sire of Koba Sir Heilo, is one of the greatest sires of the breed. His 112 daughters so far tested have 253 records which average 16,8861bs milk and 570 lbs fat irrespective of age and including 305 day tests. The dam of Mr Knutsons’ bull comes from one of the leading families iff the stud. Due to an
