AXIS PROBLEMS

ON EASTERN FRONT FRANK ADMISSIONS MADE BY ITALIANS. TRIBUTE TO RUSSIAN FIGHTING POWER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 24. Italian newspapers arc still publishing frank admissions of Axis difficulties in Russia. The “Regima Fascista” says no prisoners are taken on the Odessa front, owing to the fierceness of the fighting. Even boys and girls are in the Odessa front line. The Rumanians have had to make very heavy sacrifices. The Russian tactics have produced excellent results. They retire only" to counter-attack. The “Corriere Della Sera” reports that a German inventory of food stocks in the Kiev district has shown insufficient stocks even for civilians. The Russians removed their reserves two months ago. The principle whereby an army lives on an occupied country cannot be applied in Russia. GERMAN CLAIM (Received This Day, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON. September 24. A German communique says: “Further sections of the enemy were annihilated yesterday in the area east of Kiev. The remainder have been concentrated in two closely-encircled pockets. Air photographs of the enemy testify to chaotic conditions. The complete elimination of these forces can be reckoned on within a few days.” SUPPLIES FOR RUSSIA AUSTRALIA GIVES. WAY. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 24. Mr R. G. Casey (Australian Minister) conferred with Mr Cordell Hull today and discussed the general world situation. He said Australia will forego for the present some materials for which she has arranged, so that areas in the greatest need may obtain them promptly. Of these areas, Russia is foremost, particularly where aeroplanes, petroleum, aluminium and machine tools are concerned.
