ALFREDTON

PATRIOTIC SOCIETY GAMES NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly “games night” conducted by the Patriotic Society was held on Saturday evening. The winners in the euchre tournament were: —Ladies: Miss M. Smith. Men: Mr J. B. Smith and Mr' R. Low (equal). A competition for a box of groceries realised £2 6s, and was won by Mr J. B. Smith and resold to Mr H. Kebbell. Competitions for two boxes of chocolates were won by Mr R. Kebbell and Miss K. Henderson. The sum obtained was £1 18s 3d. The following vegetables and flowers were auctioned by Mr R. Kebbell: —Flowers donated by Mrs G. Napier realised £1 Is 8d; flowers and vegetables donated by Mr H. Kebbell, £1 14s; flowers donated by Mrs R. Low, Is; lupin plants from Mrs R. Low, 3s; carrots, parsnips and onion plants, donated by Mrs Hurford, 9s; vegetables donated by Mr M. Godinagh, 13s; vegetables from Mr W. Rolls, 2s 6d; flowers from Mrs J. Williams, 3s 6d. A donation of 10s was received from Mr H. Kebbell. Mr G. Godinagh donated a pack of cards for use when card parties were held. It was decided to donate 5 guineas to' the Nurse Matthews’ Fund. The total sum obtained during the evening was £l3 10s 7d. The hostesses were Mesdames T. Smith and Mrs E. McLean and Miss Cave. Personal Items, Miss M. Smith has returned home after having spent a few days in Wellington. Mrs A. Lessels has returned to her home in Nelson. Mr C. Hartley has returned home from the hospital. Mr S. Edmonds has entered the Pahiatua Public Hospital. Miss Betty Edmonds has returned home from hospital and has quite recovered from her accident. Parcels for Soldiers. Members of the local institute spent an afternoon recently packing Christmas parcels for the local soldiers overseas, one parcel being included for a lonely soldier.
