BOMBINC OF CAIRO

REPRISAL IN PROSPECT BRITISH WARNING RECALLED. ATTACK ON ROME EXPECTED. <Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, September 17. Following an air raid on Cairo yesterday, the newspapers give prominence to the warning issued from No. 10 Downing Street on April 18. The “Daily Telegraph” says that if the bombing (in which 39 people were killed and 93 injured) are proved to have been deliberate, then the bombing of Rome will undoubtedly begin in the next few days. Bombs have previously been dropped on Cairo but only in the suburbs and open country around the city. The Germans claim that the attackers scored a direct hit on a British aerodrome and hangars and barracks were hit. The announcement made from No. 10 Downing Street on April 18 was as follows: — “In view of German threats to bomb Athens and Cairo, the British Government wishes it to be understood that if either of these cities is molested it will commence the systematic bombing of Rome. Once this is begun it will continue as convenient 1 till the end of the war. The greatest care will be taken not to bomb the Vatican City and the strictest orders to that effect have been issued. “It has, however, come to the knowledge of the British Government that an Italian squadron is being held ready in Rome to drop captured British bombs upon the Vatican City should a British raid take place. It is therefore necessary to expose this characteristic trick beforehand.” PROTEST BY EGYPT LONDON, September 17. The Egyptian Government has protested to Berlin and Rome against the bombing of Cairo.
