WOMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held yesterday, Mrs McGarry (president) being in the chair. There was a large attendance, and the proceedings were very enthusiastic. Twelve soldiers’ parcels were received, and also a large hamper of clothing for the Lady Galway Appeal Fund. It was reported that three housekeepers had been placed during the month. Mrs McGarry resigned her position as president, owing to the shortage of farm labour precluding her carrying out the duties of her office. Mrs O’Brien was appointed president. SCHOOL AFFAIRS ' MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Martinborough District High School was held last night. There were present: Messrs E. C. Sadd (chairman), K. Arthur, R. P. George, G. P. Cotter, L. A. Campbell, F. B. Wright, J. deV. Blathwayt,, and the headmaster (Mr D. C. Pryor). Accounts amounting to £29 11s lOd were passed for payment. The headmaster reported that the average attendances were: Primary, 176; secondary, 36. Messrs Cotter and Blathwayt were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Mr F. B. Wright was appointed secretary to the Dental Clinic for the remainder of the financial year. COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING THIS MORNING. The monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough today. The chairman, Mr A. B. Martin, presided. There were also present: Councillors R. Smith, D. Cameron, J. C. Bidwill, Q. Donald, J. A. McLeod, G. Gillies, L. J. Thompson and R. W. Matthews. Prior to the commencement of business, those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to Mr W. B. Martin in his bereavement. Mr Martin had received official advice that his son, Private Peter Martin, had been _ posted missing, some time ago, but this .week he received cabled advice that his son had been killed in action. The Tuhitarata school committee wrote complaining of the muddy state of the access road to the school. It was decided to metal the road. It was decided to send Mr H. A. Truman, Health Inspector, a letter of congratulation on his new appointment. “The position is very satisfactory,” said Mr Martin, in commenting on the state of the riding accounts. “But it must be remembered that a considerable amount of work has to be carried out in repairing roads damaged by flooding and slips.” The engineer was authorised to make enquiries concerning mechanical equipment to clear slips. Accounts for £7llO 9s 4d were passed. The ranger reported having dealt with 5 head of stock and 120 dogs. Personal. On Wednesday evening the settlers of Hinakura foregathered at “Maorilands” to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Schofield, who are leaving the district after a residence of 18 years. Mr R. Cundy, on behalf of the settlers, presented Mr Schofield with a travelling rug and Mrs Schofield with a kid handbag. Mr Schofield will be much missed in the district, where he had always taken a keen interest in the local affairs and had been chairman of the school committee for the past eight years. Soldiers’ Christmas Parcels. Patriotic workers have been very busy during the past week packing soldiers’ Christmas parcels for despatch to the troops overseas. No less than 330 parcels have been prepared.
