OPAKI

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BUSINESS AT SEPTEMBER MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The September meeting of the Opaki Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs Wingate. Mrs Beetham presided. Correspondence was received from the Wairarapa Federation in reference to the council meeting to be held in Carterton on October 17. Arrangements for the Red Cross shop day on September 24 were made. The Opaki Institute will supply helpers for the produce stall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will collect all possible produce. Miss lorns gave a reading from Mr C. Bannister’s book on the early Wairarapa. describing the site of Masterton before settlement. Competition results for the month were: Sewing, Miss lorns 1. Mrs Rayner 2, Mrs Wyeth 3; cooking (ginger nuts), Mrs Rayner 1, Mrs Wyeth 2, Mrs Miller 3; best bloom, Mrs Chesterman 1, Miss lorns 2, Mrs Wyeth 3. The roll call, “A holiday episode,” provided much amusement. A beautiful eastern rug and silver filagree ornaments, gifts from soldiers in Egypt, were shown by members. The October meeting will be held at Mrs Beetham’s home when the competitions will be: A child’s apron, plain scones, and the best bloom. The roll call will be ‘‘Duties a farmer expects of his wife.” Mrs Harris will arrange for a demonstration.
