WOMEN’S DIVISION

MEETING OF CARTERTON BRANCH « ... KNITTED GOODS SENT AWAY. WINNERS OF COMPETITIONS. , (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs H. E. Ordish presided. The meeting opened with the reading of the creed, followed by prayer. Two new members were welcomed, Mesdames Knowles and McGhie. The Scouts’ concert held during the month was a great success and the Scouts had donated 2 guineas to the Social Club for its assistance. The shop day held during the month resulted in a return of £B. Letters of thanks were received from the Navy League and Mercantile Marine for the receipt of woollen goods. During the month the following knitted goods were sent to the Navy and Mercantile Service: 7 pairs of socks. 22 caps, 9 sleeveless pullovers, and 3 longsleeved polo-necked jerseys. It was reported that members of the Women's Division used 200 skeins of wool a month. Members were reminded that on the next meeting day the Spring Flower Show would be held. During the afternoon presentations were made by the president to three members who were recently married, Mesdames Foreman, Rowlands and Hood with a present from the Social Club. In each case the gifts were gratefully acknowledged. An interesting talk on the Waitangi Centenary celebrations was given by Mrs Renall. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Miss June Booth gave a most interesting demonstration on the spinning of wool. Mrs Maitland also showed members how to knit wool from the fleece. Competitions for next month arc to be: The largest quantity of old rags, to be judged by weight; these rags are to be sold for the division funds; cooking, ginger biscuits, to be sent to the Y.M.C.A. The competition for a box of chocolates was won by Mr G. Haughan. Competition results are: — Cooking: Mrs Swan, 1; Mrs Bassett, 2; Mrs McKenzie. 3. Knitted cap: Mrs W. Daysh, 1; Mrs Swan, 2; Mrs Ordish, 3. Best bloom: Mrs E. W. Allen, 1; Mrs G. Couper, 2: Mrs McKenzie, 3. Best shrub: Mrs E. W. Allen, 1; Mrs G. Couper, 2; Mrs G. Couper, 3. The cooking and knitting classes were judged by Mrs Savill and the flowers by Mrs Hawker, to whom votes of thanks were extended. The hostesses for the afternoon Were Mesdames Anderson, Hall, Swan, Goodin. Maitland and Couper,
