OPTIMIST CLUB

MEETING IN MASTERTON LAST NIGHT YEAR’S ACTIVITIES UNDER REVIEW. CLOSING SESSION OF SEASON. The 1941 session of the Masterton Optimist Club was brought to a close in the Y.M.C.A. buildings last night when a good muster of members sat down to tea. Chief Smiler R. C. Baikie presided. Mr E. J. Brown was present as the guest of the club. The sheriff's session conducted by Optimist E. J. Esler proved fruitful and amusing. The song session, led by Padre H. Taepa with Optimist E. Codfl ington Junr. at the piano was thoroughly enjoyed. Votes of thanks were accorded executive officers for their services during the season. The annual report and balance sheet, signed by the chairman, Mr Baikie, and the secretary, Mi* W. H. Lee, was adopted. The report expressed thanks to the Y.M.C.A. for the privileges readily granted to the club at all times, and to the caterers, Mr and Mrs Graham, for the excellent service they had rendered. During the year the club undertook to assist the Ladies’ Auxiliary in furnishing new curtains for the social hall. Members have assisted the Y.M.C.A. in every way possible during the year, bearing in mind the objects of the movement, good fellowship and service. In addition to addresses by several members of the community, the club, on various occasions held debates and impromptu; speeches, which were very successful, and amusing. The following were' thanked for addresses during the year: Messrs F. C. Daniell (The History of Electricity in N.Z.); 11. Piper (Government Fitness Campaign); T. A. Russell (Plumbing and Plumbers); R. H. D. Stidolph (Native Bird Life); C. R. Mabson (Water); A. C. Tatton (Petroleum); J. V. Dolan. (Military Intelligence in the Boer War); and P. J. Lee (Camp Life at Waiouru). “We deeply regret the loss of so many members during the year but feel "proud that so many Optimists are helping to defeat the common enemy,” the report states. “There are at present 14 members serving overseas. . . The thanks of the executive are due to the pianist. Optimist E. Coudington, the Sheriff. Optimist Esler; the Press; to the Y.M.C.A. general secretary, Mr C. W. Gaze; and to all Optimists for their co-operation, for the betterment of the chib.

Arrangements were made for a function to be held on Saturday, September 27. following which they would attend a dance in the Y.M.C.A. games hall.
