MOLE DRAINING

DEMONSTRATION AT WESTMERE. There was a large gathering at Mr G. Thomson’s property at Westmere yesterday afternoon at a demonstration on the McLeod method of mole draining. J „ Mr N. Lamont, of the Department oi Agriculture, Masterton, was the demonstrator. He showed that under the McLeod system the advantages over other established methods ol mole draining were open, clear outlets ' a saving of tiles, a clear open channel without any dependency on seepage and a saving in tractor time. Mr Lamont also demonstrated an automatic release pipe puller, an attachment invented by Mi* O. L. Sykes, Westmere, assisted by Mr H. A. Harcombe, which sank rhe tile and enabled the tractor to continue its course. Those present considered that the attachment was likely to prove of considerable value and an asset to all mole drainers. Mr A. W. Hudson, of Massey College, was present. Many farmers took the opportunity of discussing with him problems associated with mole ingMr Simpson also addressed the gathering on the proposals to use Scheme 13 for labour on the farms. At the conclusion of the demonstration Mr R. W. Kebbell moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Thomson for the use of his property, to Mr Sykes for the use of his tractor and equipment; to Mr Lamont for Ins demonstration, and the ladies for the excellent afternoon tea provided.
