CARTERTON RACING

HISTORY OF CLUB INTERESTING DETAILS. GIVEN BY MR. W. B. ALLEN. (“Times-Age” Special.) Some interesting details of early days in the history of the Carterton Racing Club are given by Mr W. B. Allen. Mr Allen states that in 1870 the programme for the races on the Taratahi course included sports, tilting in the ring, a high jump and a mile race for men, with a £2O stake to the winner. He joined the Taratahi Club in 1876 and still took an interest in the club today. He left for two years to take up the position of clerk of works in drilling the water tunnel through the Wainui-O-Mata hill for the Wellington City Council in 1880. Mr Allen then returned to Glareville and built the present Clareville school, later taking up the lease of the Taratahi racecourse. After many years as treasurer, but without money on hand to start i a meeting, Mr E. H. Buckeridge said he would be responsible for the stake money. A programme was drawn up and excellent support was received from horse owners. When the meeting closed there was sufficient money in hand to pay the winning owners, with a balance of £6O. Mr Allen states that he placed £5O on deposit in the Bank of New Zealand and next year a profit of £lOO was made. There was never the need of an overdraft at the bank. When Mr William McKenzie was proprietor of the “Wairarapa Observer,” Carterton, a grandstand was built with the profits of twelve years' operations. Mr Allen has lived to the great age when he has outlived three lots of racing stewards, namely, those of 1870, 1880 and 1890. Mr Allen considers that he is the oldest member of the club left to see the new start at the Taratahi course on September 13. Mr Allen's son, Mr G. E. Allen, was one year old when Mr Allen joined the stewards, some of whom were Mr Thomas Bennett (secretary), Charles Giles, P. Sheren, I. Pike, John Nicol, T. Ray, W. Frances, John Eaton, J. B. Williams, W. B. Allen, and B. Boys (judge).
