E.P.S. UNITS
MEETING OF MASTERTON COMMITTEE TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS. APPOINTMENT OF CONTROLLER STILL AWAITED. At a well attended meeting of the Masterton E.P.S. Committee held in the Municipal Chambers last night further progress was made with completing the local arrangements. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided. New members on the committee were impressed with the good work already accomplished by the many volunteer workers who have given so freely of their time. The Minister of Transport, Mr Semple, advised that the nomination of Mr P. F. Fagan as district transport controller had been received and that consideration would be given to the committee's nominee. Concern was expressed by the chairman and others that the matter had been so long delayed and it was decided to write to the Minister of National Service urging that the matter be completed. It was stated that in the event of an emergency affecting coastal towns the supply and transport sections would be of particular importance. Several members of the former E.P.S. drill unit were granted transfers to the Home Guard. Mr Jordan explained that the E.P.S. drill unit had been disbanded when the army took over the Home Guard. “It is inevitable that men classed as medically unfit for the Home Guard will be drafted to the E.P.5.,” he said. Appreciative reference was made to the work of the Health Inspector, Mr Trueman as a lecturer and it was decided to 'send him a letter of thanks and at the same time congratulate him on his appointment as borough engineer and sanitary inspector at Dannevirke. Mr J. L. Wood, Social Security Registrar, was thanked for his work in drafting an E.P.S. map for Masterton.
