WAR WORK
SPECIAL SCREENING OF FILMS IN MASTERTON. TO HOME GUARD, E.P.S., ETC. The special screening of war pictures in the Opera House, Masterton, tonight, will occupy two hours. With one exception the films will be talkies. The first film shows the many and varied ways in which women are taking part in the Australian war effort. The work of the Red Cross from the mobilisation camps to the battlefield is also shown. Particular reference is made to the large sum of money realised from the collection of waste materials. The second film deals with the handling of incendiary bombs. A demonstration is given of the effect thermite burns have on steel. Another reel deals with A.R.P. work in England. The film was specially taken for the Si. John Ambulance organisation. The methods used in gas decontamination work are also shown. “The Young Veteran” is the title of a film which deals with the experiences of a young English soldier from the time of his Territorial training to the Dunkirk evacuation. Bomb throwing methods and field tactics used in the Spanish war are featured.
A film showing the latest developments in American war production is considered to be the most important of the group. The latest views of Manchester, Sheffield and Coventry since the Germans launched their mass bombing attacks will also be shown. The only silent film in the group will deal with the methods of rescuing and reviving air raid victims. Messrs H. H. and R. F. Adams, who will show the films, arrived in Masterton this morning.
