Conversion of Motor Cars.

The unlawful conversion of five cars in Wellington, Petone and Lower Hutt was reported to the police last night. Two cars were removed from Boulcott Street, Wellington, two from Beach Street, Petone, and one removed from Lower Hutt was later found in Boulcott Street. Golf Links Closed. The Masterton and the Mahunga Golf Clubs’ links have been closed over the weekend on account of the continued wet weather. Child Suffers Scalds. A child, Doreen Hourigan, of 15 Elizabeth Street. Masterton. was admitted to hospital last night with scalds. It is reported that she had spilt boiling water over herself. Her condition is satisfactory. Truck Catches Fire. The Masterton Fire Brigade turned out in response to a call received at 8.58 o’clock this morning and promptly extinguished a fire which had broken out on a truck at Green's Service Station. When the brigade arrived the fire was extending to the enclosed pit. Masterton Petition. A petition was presented to the House of Representative on Thursday by Mr J. Robertson, Member for Masterton, on behalf of lady hairdressers of Masterton, praying for protection against uneconomic competition. The petition will be considered by a select committee of the House.

Treatment of Wounded Soldiers. A discussion by the Wairarapa Hospital Board on Wednesday about the hospital treatment of wounded soldiers after their discharge from the military forces was the subject of a question to the Acting-Prime Minister, notice of which was given in the House of Representatives by Mr J. Robertson (Mas* terton). Mr Robertson asked whether the Minister’s attention had been drawn to the report of the meeting, and. if he would make a statement, setting out the exact position as a good deal of confusion seemed to exist about the hospital treatment of soldiers. A Mayor’s Rebuke.

Keen disappointment was expressed by the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr A. E. Mansford, at the complimentary function held on Thursday night in the Opera House, Palmerston North, at the poor attendance of citizens. Despite frequent appeals previously made, there were comparatively few present, and this was commented on by the Mayor, who said that he thought it was not too much to ask the people to show their appreciation of the men. The Rev. J. Hubbard said he trusted that citizens would heed the Mayor’s rebuke, for a realisation of the fact that the country was fighting for its existence should assure that on such occasions the building should be packed from floor to ceiling,
