GREYTOW BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL
LOAN LIABILITIES TO BE ADJUSTED. MASTERTON BUILDER'S TENDER ACCEPTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council there were present 'the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton), Councillors E. Balfour, I. Blissett, G. Eagar, H. J. Farley, A. Stuart. H. C. Trotman, F. Wood. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors H. McKenna and W. A. Tate.
The pound-keeper reported that no stock had been dealt with during July. The Rev. H. Eloomfield wrote asking for the use of the Town Hall for combined intercession services which would be held on one Sunday in each month. The request was acceded to providing the Minister could make arrangements with the caretaker in the matter of wages. The traffic unit of the Home Guard was granted the use of the committee room for Monday evenings of each week.
The Town Hall was granted free of charge for the showing of Home Guard and E.P.S. films on Wednesday, September 10. The transfer of the lease of the channel reserve from Heapy’s Ltd., to Ling Sing was agreed to. The lease of the grazing rights at the Memorial Park to A. H. York for a period of five years was agreed to. A letter was received stating that the Featherston County Council had now agreed to enter into an agreement to adjust the loan liabilities as between the County and the Borough with respect to a seceded area. Such agreement is to be the basis upon which the Minister of Finance may make his award. The agreement is being prepared and will be submitted to the next meeting of the council. The council agreed to declare a public holiday from 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 30, the “people’s day” of the Wairarapa Show. The Carterton Racing Club wrote asking the council to invite business people to close their shops at 11 a.m. on September 13 for the annual race meeting. The letter was received.
One tender was received for the erection of a foundation wall at the Fire Station, that of D. F. Andrews, Masterton, which was accepted. The borough solicitor is to be instructed to require an estate to complete the demolition of buildings in Main Street.
The Health Inspector and Councillor Trotman are to be asked to submit a report on several buildings which require repairing.
The foreman, Mr J. Lyford, reported that during July metalling had been carried out on Wood Street and Papawai Road. The grader had been in operation on several roads. The main sewer had also been attended to. The gas manager reported as follows: Gas made, 224.000 cubic feet; coke sold, 2 tons; ten consumers had changed over to electricity during the month.
The works committee recommended that the application of Mr W. G. K. Wiggins to have Kuratawhiti Street tar sealed, to the boundary, be considered when next year’s estimates were under consideration. The committee considered that the borough foreman had sufficient work to undertake and that a separate noxious weeds inspector be appointed. The report was adopted.
