Mr A. R. Wills has been reappointed conductor of the Invercargill Civic Band for the thirty-fifth year. Mr K. Clark was the guest recently of his sister, Mrs L. S. Nicol, and Mr Nicol, “Redwoods,” Upper Plain. Sergeant Observer Wylie J. Wakelin. Hataitai, Wellington, has been promoted to pilot officer, according to cable advice received by relatives. The funeral of the late Mrs A. M. Hill took place in Masterton yesterday. Services at the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service, Ltd., and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. H. S. Kings. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. W. Blair, C. W. Blair, G. R. Garrett, R. R. Burridge, R. Lambert and F. E. Hunt.

A letter received by Mr Spicer. Short Street, Masterton. from overseas states that Private Charlie Weller, New Zealand cross country champion, and Private L. Hack, a former member of the Masterton Harrier Club, are in good health in Egypt and send greetings to harrier friends in Masterton.

The possessor of a fine record of public service, including 26 years as a member of the Auckland City Council and 20 years on the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr George Knight, of Mount Albert, celebrated his 93rd birthday on Sunday. A resident of Auckland for 58 years, he has been closely associated with public affairs over three decades.

The death has occurred of Mr Francis Augustine Jones, aged 71, says a Dargaville Press Association message. He was a member of the Kaipara Hospital Board, and was Mayor of the Borough of Dargaville from 1925 to 1939. He was president of the Northern Wairoa St. John Ambulance and a foundation member and first president of the Dargaville Rotary Club. The death occurred somewhat suddenly on Sunday of Dr. A. Norman Jones, who for some years practised dentistry in Wellington, retiring through ill-health five years ago to Lower Hutt. He was 63 years of age, and was a son of the late Captain Frederick Jones, Dunedin, who was associated with the late Sir James Mills in the foundation of the Union Steam Ship Company.
