FLOWERING APPLES
OVER SIX HUNDRED PLANTED IN MASTERTON.SOME VANDALISM REPORTED. Over 600 flowering apple trees have been planted in Masterton this season as the initial move in the establishment of this beautiful shrub as the town flower. Most of the planting was done by the Beautifying Society, which put cut about 400. Other plantings for which the Masterton Horticultural Society, the Borough Council and private individuals were responsible would bring the total to over 600. Areas in which the more extensive plantings have taken place include portion of Macara Street, the whole of Cambridge Terrace, and replacements in Victoria Street. A few trees were put out in the Cole Street crossing and the Kuripuni Triangle. All schools, private and public, received on the average, about a dozen each while the Beautifying Society planted about 50 for private individuals. Other’ residents planted their own trees and the Masterton Horticultural Society supplied over two dozen for the Masterton Hospital grounds and 30 or 40 for the Park, where an avenue has been planted from the Ladies’ Baths to the Lake. It is regrettable that vandalism for which adults must have been responsible has been reported from Cambridge Terrace, where not only were four of the newly-planted trees destroyed but the iron standards protecting them were bent right down to the ground. Residents who wish to participate in the move to make Masterton a show place during the period in which the flowering apple blossoms still havetime to plant trees this season. The Beautifying Society intends to continue its campaign next season.
