WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT HAMUA. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Hamua Women’s Institute Mrs Hobbs presided over a fair attendance of members. The motto for the month was: “Let's all stick together and the clouds will soon roll by.” Miss Hazel Johnson wrote advising that she would give a lecture at the September meeting. A parcel of nine scarves, four pairs of mittens, and two pairs of minesweepers’ mittens, was sent to the Navy League. A bring and buy 1 stall brought in the sum of 7s lOd. The mystery parcel was won by Mrs Cavanagh and Mrs Farrow’s wall competition was won by Mrs Humphreys. The competition for the month resulted: —Best bloom: Mrs McLaughlin, 1; Mrs Davies, 2. Net tray cover: Mrs McGarvie, 1; Mrs Davies and Mrs Galvin (equal), 2. The hostesses were Mrs R. J. Smith and Miss F. Smith. Personal. Mr J. Welch, of Kakariki, had the misfortune recently to sustain a fractured leg when a horse fell on him. He is making a satisfactory recovery in the Pahiatua Hospital. The Rev. and Mrs L. Ives and family left for Okato yesterday. The new Vicar to St. Cuthbert’s, the Rev. R. E. Williams, will arrive here on September 8, and will be inducted by the Bishop on September 11. Cake Competition. The winner of the cake competition held in conjunction with the Fire Brigade Ball was “Optimist,” Fire Brigade, Masterton. The ingredients for the cake were donated by Mrs A. S. Carter and ti was baked and decorated by Mrs R. Gallagher and Miss G. Gallagher.
