HOUSE FERNS
PROTECT THEM FROM DRAUGHTS
The proper care of ferns in rooms consists in keeping them protected from cold draughts and in preventing the accumulation of dust on the fronds. On a warm showery day the plants may be stood out of doors with the object of cleansing the fronds, or they may be syringed with water, preferably rain water, with the chill taken off.
Disappointment is frequently due to careless watering. While the soil should be kept regularly moist, it must not remain saturated, or it will become sour, and nothing short of repotting will effect improvement. When it is necessary, however, watering must be done thoroughly; frequent sprinklings are useless. If there is any doubt as to whether the soil is well moistened throughout, immerse the pots in water for ten minutes, then stand them where they can drain thoroughly before returning to the room. Ferns should be kept where strong sunshine will not reach them. Never let the pots stand in receptacles containing water which has drained from them.
