STATE OF SIEGE
4, DECLARED IN BOLIVIA ON ACCOUNT OF NAZI INTRIGUES. ATTEMPT TO INTERRUPT SHIPMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 20. A message from La Paz, Bolivia, states that a state of siege has been decreed as the result of the discovery of pro-Nazi elements and subversive activities, which, according to the official spokesman, have been carried on under the direction of the German Legation secretary. The spokesman said the decree was in keeping with the Government’s duty to maintain public order and “to develop an energetic attitude in the face of demagogy trying to undermine public order.” The Ministry of the Interior announced that the country is tranquil, and that all measures are precautionary. United States Government cricles conjecture that Nazi agents have been seeking to foment revolution in Bolivia with the object of interrupting tin shipments to Britain and the United States. Bolivia is the world’s third largest tin producer. Another message states that the German Minister in Bolivia was ordered to depart at 24 hours’ notice.
