MARTINBOROUGH
BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes), Crs C. W. Skill, G. P. Cotter, .W. H. Corfield, F. Gray, M. N. Hardie, T. A. Hamilton, W. J. Blissett. An apology for absence was received from Crs M. Mulvaney and Sievers. A circular was read from Takapuna Borough Council advocating that free travelling passes be granted to men of the armed forces. It was resolved that the request be supported. The Fire Brigade wrote asking that the old hose reel be sold. It was decided to agree to the request. A circular was read from the Board of Health relative to the chlorination of the water supply. It was decided that a reply be sent explaining the improvements recently made to the water supply. Cr Skill, chairman of the works committee, placed on the table a sample of the filtered water in connection with the new scheme. Crs Cotter and Gray expressed appreciation of Cr Skill’s work. The chairman of the Park Committee stated that Mr W. B. Martin was replacing two trees in the Square. MiMartin had rendered splendid service in connection with the parks. It was resolved that a letter of appreciation be sent to the Patriotic Committee in connection with its effort to raise the district quota of £2BOO. Cr Cotter moved that letters of sympathy be sent to parents of local soldiers who are reported missing. The motion was carried. The ranger reported having dealt with seven head of stock during the month. A deputation comprising Mr A. B. Martin (chairman) and Mr H. Hardinge (county clerk) waited on the council to request its signature to plans for co-ordinating the services of the borough and county in the event of a disaster or war emergency. It was stated that the Featherston County was divided into three units, Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough, and it was desired, while each unit was organised separately, that combined aid could be rendered at any ong place i where required. Mr Martin explained the project and answered several questions. The council decided to sign the plans, and they will be forwarded forthwith to the Department. This will complete the organisation of Featherston county. GARDEN CIRCLE MEETING OF MEMBERS. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Garden Circle. Mrs A. Tyler presided. A competition, “Whrt I Know of Chrysanthemums,” was won by Mrs Herrick. The competition for the “best flower in my garden” was won by Mesdames Watson and Thomas (equal) with Mrs Harrios second, and Mrs Tyler third. The shrub competition was won by Mrs Boyd.
