ALFREDTON
PATRIOTIC SOCIETY FORTNIGHTLY GAMES NIGHT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly games night conducted by the Patriotic Society was held on Saturday evening, the winners of the euchre games were: Ladies, Mrs J. Harley; men, Messrs E. Anderson, G. Godinagh, R. Seymour, R. Low and H. Percy, equal. The winners of the aggregate were: —Ladies: Mesdames G. Yarrall, W. Rolls and J. Hartley. Mrs Yarrall won the draw, the prize being donated by Mrs H. Kebbell. The ladies’ booby prize was won by Mrs F. Johnston. This prize was donated by Mrs Harcombe. Mr G. Godinagh won the men’s prize donated by Mrs J. Hartley, and the men’s booby prize went to Mr E. Seymour, the prize being presented by Miss E. McLean. A raffle of a set of .jugs was won by Mr Stanley Smith and realised £2 11s 6d. Two boxes of chocolates were raffled and the winners were Mrs R. Low and Mr lan McDonald. The following goods were auctioned by Mr F. Johnson: —Crayfish, donated by Mr A. Leach, realised 21s; leeks, donated by Mrs R. Payne, realised 3s 3d; roast of beef, donated by Mr G. Napier, realised 7s; carrots and parsnips, donated by Master Charlie Leach, realised 4s 3d; marrow, donated by Mr Foster Percy, realised 6s. Playing cards were donated by Miss Kathleen Henderson, Miss Hare and Mr E. Seymour. The total for the evening was £lO. The hostesses were Mrs Harcombe and the Misses E. McLean . and. M. Heckler.
PATRIOTIC BALL
MOST SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The Alfredton Patriotic Ball which was held last Thursday evening, was a great success. The hall was beautifully decorated with evergreens and berries and red, white and blue streamers. Mr D. Parsonson, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr and Mrs R. Kebbell, and thanked all those present for their attendance. Special thanks were given to Mr A. C. Edmonds and his committee for their untiring efforts. The following donations were received: Mr C. H. Dickens £5, Mr R. Kebbell £2, Mrs R. Kebbell £l, Mr J. McDonald £2 2s, Mr and Mrs A. Edmonds £1 18s 6d, Mr G. Kebbell 10s, Mr G. Higginson 10s. The door takings amounted to £24 14s 6d. Visitors were present from Masterton, Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Tiraumea, Rakanui, and many other surrounding districts. The music supplied by the Blue River Band was all that could be desired. Miss B. Edmonds played an extra. The supper arranged by the ladies' committee was much appreciated. Messrs J. and Ean Macdonald capably carried out the duties of M.’sC. Non-dancers were catered for in the supper room, where large log fires were kept burning. Home Guard. The Home Guard held its weekly parade at the Domain in showery conditions on Saturday afternoon. Signalling, bayonet fighting, the making of a range chart, a talk on field craft and ceremonial company drill, provided the afternoon's work. Personal. Mr and Mrs E. Hutchings left during the weekend to reside in Eketahuna. Both Mr and Mrs Hutchings will be missed by their many friends, as they took a keen interest in all local activities.
