MINISTER OF STATE
DUTIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST BROAD OUTLINE GIVEN. MACHINERY FOR CONCERTED ACTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 12.30 p.m.) CAIRO, July 8. Captain Oliver Lyttelton (Minister of State in the Middle East) in an interview, said the Ccmmander-in-Chief would be able to refer questions to him for decision. He had special machinery for concerted action between the heads of the three Services. He would also be able to keep in close and immediate touch with the British Prime Minister (Mr Churchill). The Minister explained that he would deal with general political matters and the broader aspects of military organisation. For instance, he would control relations with the Free French and with the lymperor, Haile Selassie and would supervise the administration of occupied enemy territory and shipping priority. Fie emphasised that the Red Sea was now a non-combatant zone. This was a reward for our great victories in East Africa. His work would probably keep him in Cairo for the duration of the war.
