ALFREDTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE COMPETITION WINNERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute was held on Friday. Most of the time was spent in sewing warm clothing for refugees. The competitions resulted as follows:—Balaclava, Mrs C. Low 1, Mrs Dickens 2. Pullovers, Mrs C. Low 1, Mrs F. McLean 2, Mrs Rolls 3. Mittens, Mrs E. Hutchings 1, Mrs C. Low 2, Mrs E. McLean 3. Scarf. Mrs Hull I, Mrs E. McLean 2 and 3. There were over 20 knitted garments entered for competition. These will be sent to soldiers overseas. Each member brought along an article for the soldiers’ parcels. During the afternoon Mrs McAnulty, of Kaiparoro, gave a very interesting demonstration on the spinning wheel and on the carding of wool. Mrs Groves explained how the spinning was done, and also the different stages the wool passes through. Mrs McAnulty also brought along some beautiful wool mats made from unravelled wool, and also eiderdowns made from a teased fleece. About 20 school girls were present at this most interesting demonstration. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs McAnulty. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs M. Stone-Wigg, Mrs E. Hutchings and Miss J. Algie. On Saturday last the Home Guard held a parade at the Domain. Ceremonial and field drill were indulged in. Judging distance and a demonstration in making a range chart, bayonet fighting and semophore signalling were also carried out. FIRST AID CLASS EXAMINATION PASSES. Members of the first aid class concluded their examinations on Saturday afternoon. The class was very fortunate in having Dr Simmers to give lectures. Mrs M. Stone-Wigg gave valuable assistance to the candidates. Dr Paterson was the examiner. All members of the class passed, viz., Mesdames Clarkson, C. Low, Dickens, Smith, McKay, V. Payne, B. Payne, Seymour, Leach, Hartley, R. Kebbell and Treadray, Misses G. Napier, S. Napier, Cave, J. Algie, M. Heckler, B. Napier, E. Leach, Hare and N. Turton. Patriotic Ball. At a meeting of all the local bodies held on Saturday it was decided to hold a Patriotic Ball on Thursday, July 10, in the Alfredton Hall. Those present represented the churches, Women’s Institute, Young Farmers’ Club, Tennis Club, Golf Club, Rifle Club, Sports Club and Dog Trial Club. The music is to be supplied by the Blue River Band and a home-made supper will be provided by the ladies. L/Ac. Dion Kebbell, who is indisposed, will be unable to attend as guest of honour. Personal Items. Mrs J. Taylor, of Marton, is visiting her mother, Mrs Johnson. Mrs N. Hall is the guest of Mrs L. McKenna, of Pihautea. Mr and Mrs J. Perry have left the district after having been residents of Alfredton for several years. Mr Perry has taken up a position in Taranaki. Mr and Mrs Perry took a prominent part in all local gatherings and they will be much missed by their many friends. Mr E. Seymour had the misfortune to badly sprain his ankle.
