STREETS TOO DARK

BLACKOUT OVERDONE IN OAMARU. SOME INCREASE IN LIGHTING ADVISED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) OAMARU, This Day. That Oamaru has been too enthusiastic in its blackout was made evident at a conference of E.P.S. controllers this morning, when the Assistant Dominion Lighting Controller, Mr. C. W. Bearman, said the streets were too dark. Oamaru was the darkest town he had seen and he advised that the street lighting be improved, while keeping within regulation safety limits. Mr. Bearman expressed the opinion that residents were making a good effort to comply with the regulations. but some had overdone it. Half the street lights had been switched off and the rest screened. The Assistant-Dominion Controller recommended a decrease in power, but not a reduced number’ of lights.
