POPULAR BALL A LARGE ATTENDANCE. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance at the Bachelors’ and Spinsters’ Ball held on Wednesday evening and the management were highly pleased with the success of the function. The joint secretaries (Miss J. Lovegrove and Mr D. Didsbury) and the committee are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts. Everyone present spent a thoroughly enjoyable time. The M’s.C. were Messrs R. Halidone and D. Didsbury, while the music by Carter’s Cosmopolitan Orchestra helped considerably to make the gathering the success it was. Miss B. Carter played extras. The supper arrangements as usual were of a high standard. Patriotic Committee. Mr P. S. Macdonald presided over a meeting of the local patriotic committee on Tuesday evening. The secretary (Mr Thomas) submitted a report and balance sheet in connection with the three dances held, which was considered most satisfactory. The secretary reported that he had forwarded to Mr H. Hardinge, secretary of the Martinborough centre, the net proceeds of one of the dances ana that he had received an acknowledgment and a letter of appreciation from Mr Hardinge. It was decided to hold a euchre party and dance in aid of the Heart-to-Heart Appeal. The secretary reported that parcels for local soldiers overseas had been forwarded and that the postage for same had been defrayed by a local resident. Personal. Miss Allen has taken up her duties at the local school. ■Writing to Mr Stan Mclntosh, LanceCorporal Tom Sargent mentioned that he and the other boys were well. They had a most trying time in Greece and Crete and were most fortunate to come through safely. The country in Greece, in his opinion, was poor, but the inhabitants were most hospitable. Golf.
