COMPETITION WINNERS
(“Times-Age” Special.)
There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute on Thursday in the Memorial Hall, the president (Mrs Spicer) presiding. Several competitions were held, Mrs O'Brien winning both of them.
Mr Keller, sole teacher at the Tuhitarata School, gave a most interesting and educative address on education in Germany as compared with New Zealand. The speaker dealt with his subject in an interesting manner and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Seward submitted a report of the Council meeting held recently. The junior competition .was won by Miss N. Mclntosh with Miss B. Sutton second.
It was reported that parcels for sol diers had been sent overseas.
GOLF
WIN FOR ROTOTAWAI TEAM
The inter-club match, Pirinoa v. Rototawai, was played on the local links at the weekend. The wea'ther was fine until near the close of play when rain set in. The’ greens were good, although the fairways were heavy after the all-night rain. The visitors won all the ladies’ matches and in the men's section the visitors won three matches and the local team two. The results are as follows (home players first mentioned in each -instance): — Mesdames Sutherland and Herangi lost to Mrs Pope and Miss Eargh; Mesdames Tikao and Carter lost to Mrs Feast and Miss E. Collins; Mesdames Thomas and McKenzie lost to Mesdames Elbe and Warren
J. Riwai and Herangi lost to D. C. Collins and Feast; M. McLeod and T. Hume lost to W. Stewart and B. Bidwill; G. Sutherland and D. Tikao lost to A. Juno and R. Elbe; M. Waiwera and S. Thomas beat G. Griffiths and S. Hall; D. Didsbury and J. Carter beat T. Charteria and R. Pearce; W. Charteris and N. Hume lost to Mrs and Miss Collins. CAMPBELL CUP AND ROSE BOWL.
The second round of the Campbell Cup was played on Saturday. The best not score for the day was handed in by S. Hall. Mrs Tikao with a net 84 was the best score in the ladies’ competition for the Rose Bowl. Personal Items.
Mr Frank Busch, who has been visiting relatives in Wellington, has returned home.
Mrs G. Busch is visiting relatives in the Manawatu district.
Mr Douglas Kitney, who recently commenced work after being on the sick list for some months, has again found it necessary to relinquish his duties on account of a recurrence of his complaint. Miss Purnell left on Saturday for Hastings to take up a teaching position at Stortford Lodge. Prior to the close of school on Friday Miss Purnell was the recipient of a present from the school children. Miss Lily Hutchinson is staying with friends in Martinborough. The many friends of Mrs J. Hunter will be sorry to hear that her health is causing her relatives anxiety. Mr Jack Hodges, Ranana, who was taken ill suddenly, has been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Mr Gordon Hall has left for the Trentham Camp for overseas training. Mrs Mary Riwai, Christchurch, is visiting her son, Mr'J. Riwai, Kohunui. Mrs T. Te Maari is visiting relatives in Wanganui.
Mrs F. Lovegrove was a recent visitor to ’Wellington. Mr Heta, Halcombe, was a visitor to the district for a few days. Ball Tomorrow Night. Lovers of dancing are reminded of the Bachelors’ and Spinsters’ ball which is to be held in the Memorial Hall tomorrow night. The arrangements are well forward, and an enjoyable time is assured patrons.
