GREAT PIANIST
AND POLISH PATRIOT.
DEATH OF PADEREWSKI.
(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) NEW YOLK. June 29.
The death has occurred of Ignace Jan Paderewski, the famous pianist and Polish patriot, at the age of 80 years.
Apart from his fame as one of the greatest pianists the world has known, M. Paderewski played a notable part in the history of Poland during the present century. Over an extended period of years he made generous contributions to Polish charities and educational institutions. In the year of the Chopin centenary (1910). he do-, nated some £12,000 to the Chopin Memorial Hall in Warsaw, and, in the same year, he unveiled a colossal statue of King Jagello (founder of the Polish dynasty), which he erected at a cost of £20,000. But even these princely gifts were nothing compared with his contributions to Poland during the Great War. which ended with the restoration of independence to Poland. Paderewski was then hailed as the country’s greatest benefactor, and a grateful people made him the Presi-. dent of the restored State, and as swA| he was one of the signatories of jrjKb Treaty of Versailles.
