DESTRUCTION OF SOVIET PLANES OVER 2.500 IM TWO DAYS. OFFICIAL REPORTS OTHERWISE VAGUE. - LONDON. June 29. Germany today made the first official announcement of the results of the fighting against the Russians. For days news of tremendous successes had been promised, and during the broadcast there was a great fanfare of trumpets, martial music and songs. After stating that German troops had been compelled to take up arms against Russia on June 22 because of threats to her security, the broadcast went on that in spite of the enemy's numerical superiority. 1811 enemy aircraft were destroyed in the first clay's fighting at a cost of 35 German planes. At the end of the second day 2582 Russian planes had been destroyed. The important land advance claimed by the Germans was in the! operations in the Baltic States. It was) announced that the Germans had! crossed the Viliya River and that Dvinsk (near the extreme northern corner of Latvia) was in German hands.
