HARRIER ACTIVITIES
KIATERE CLUB SATURDAY’S EVENTS AT ROTOTAWAI. POPULAR WIN FOR TEAHAN. (Contributed.) On Saturday a large number of runners and supporters of the Kiatere Harrier Club journeyed to Mr J. C. Bidwill’s property, Rototawai, when senior and junior events were held. The course severely tested the runners. G. Hayes, who was having his second run with the club, won the junior race, while W. Teahan scored a popular victory in the senior events. The juniors were first away over a 31-mile course. D. Cunningham was on the limit followed some 3 minutes later by K. Greaves, and then came G. Hayes. A. Pickett led the middle markers, followed by I. Summers, and then N. Dickel and S. Pickett, with N. Jacobsen off scratch. G. Hayes soon went through to take the lead which he held throughout and finished strongly to score a well deserved win by 100 yards from K. Greaves, who performed very creditably. N. Jacobsen made up a lot of ground over the last 1J miles and’ran a splendid race to come third. He registered the fastest time. Detailed results are:—G. Hayes (3.20) 1; K. Greaves (3.40) 2; N. Jacobsen (scr.) 3; N. Dickel (1.30) 4; D. Cunningham (7min.) 5: I. Summers (2.10) 6; S. Pickett (1.30) 7; A. Pickett (3.10) 8. Fastest times: N. Jacobsen, 24.17, 1; G. Hayes, 25.04, 2; K. Greaves, 26.47, 3. In the senior contest R. Thomson was on the limit and was followed by W. Teahan. Then came L. Frances, and then with N. Burgess off scratch. Teahan passed Thomson just before the end of the first lap and was never in danger of being caught "by the back-markers. He ran a splendid race and won by over 3 minutes from Frances, besides recording fastest time. Detailed results: —W. Teahan (3.40) 1; L. Frances (2.30), 2; W. Burgess (scr.) 3; R. Thomson (Bmin.) 4. After the events afternoon tea was served. Then the trophies, donated by Mrs D. Turnbull, were presented by the club president, Mr A. L. Askew, who also thanked Mr and Mrs R. Stalker and Mr and Mrs D. Turnbull, for having arranged the outing. Next week the 5-mile and 2|-mile club championships will be held, starting from the Solway Showgrounds at 2.30 p.m.
MASTERTON CLUB JUNIOR HANDICAP. WON BY D. CAIRNS. On Saturday at the invitation of Mr and Mrs Roy Shaw, the members of the Masterton Harrier Club held runs from their residence at Fernridge. The seniors ran over a varied course of some 4 miles, while the juniors held their first open handicap of the season over a fast flat course of 3 1-8 miles. W. Grant (2.50), who was having his first race with the club, was the first to leave the mark. He was followed by D. Cairns (1.20), with D. Wickens lOsecs later. A minute later P. Greenlees got away with the scratch man, M. Doyle going off 20secs after Greenlees. With the half-way mark reached D. Cairns had gone into the lead, followed by D. Wickens, M. Doyle, W. Grant and P. Greenlees in that order. From then on M. Doyle made a fast run to catch the leader, closely followed by P. Greenlees. With 100 yards to go M. Doyle and D. Cairns were locked together in a thrilling finish and at the tape D. Cairns had a. twoyard lead over Doyle with P. Greenlees close. up and D. Wickens some 50 yards further back. The following were the finishing times: D. Cairns 25.25, M. Doyle 25.26, P. Greenlees 25.36, D. Wickens 26.6, W. Grant 26.26. The fastest times were: M. Doyle 22.42. P. Greenlees 23.16, D. Cairns 24.5, D. Wickens 24.36, W. Grant 26.26. This race was also me iirst race for the J. Robertson Cup and the following scored points: D. Cairns 4pts, M. Doyle 3, P. Greenlees 2.
