RUGBY FOOTBALL

WAIRARAPA UNION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES ON SATURDAY. PLAY CONFINED MOSTLY TO FORWARDS. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s interclub competition was continued throughout the district in cold weather on Saturday. The grounds were heavy, and as a result play was confined mostly to the forwards. The championship leaders. Carterton, experienced little trouble in defeating Masterton at Carterton. Featherston scored a win over Red Star in a hard tussle. Gladstone and Greytown drew in an exciting game. From the form shown in club matches over the past weeks, it is anticipated that Wairarapa will give a good account of itself against Hawke's Bay at Memorial Park isext Saturday. RESULTS AT A GLANCE Senior. Featherston 14. Red Star 0. Carterton 22, Masterton 0. Gladstone 6, Greytown 6. Third Grade A. Red Star 8, Masterton 0. College 13. Old Boys 5. Third Grade B. Dalefield 8, Featherston 8. Fourth Grade. Carterton 17, Martinborough 11.

SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP FEATHERSTON BEAT RED STAR. HARD TUSSLE AT MEMORIAL PARK. Featherston beat Red Star by 14 points to nil in a keen, hard tussle at Memorial Park. Red Star showed a vast improvement in their play, particularly on defence. The forwards, led by R. Howard, worked hard. In the back line, N. O’Kane was prominent and showed great pace. Few opportunities came to the backs, as the heavy ground resulted in play being confined to the forwards. The Featherston forwards adopted spoiling tactics and kept Red Star on the defence throughout the game. The backs combined well and made good use of the few opportunities which offered. Mahupuka and J. Cross were outstanding. Featherston’s score came from tries by J. Cross (2), I. Chapman and Mahupuka. Huxtable converted a try.

CARTERTON v. MASTERTON. EASY WIN FOR HOME TEAM. Played at Carterton in bitterly cold weather on Saturday, the senior game, Carterton v. Masterton, ended in a win for Carterton by 22 points to nil. The visitors started well, and for a time it looked as if they would give their opponents a hard task to win. The Carterton team played with white arm bands as a mark of respect to their late comrade, Private A. R. Steffert, who died in Egypt of wounds received in the Battle of Crete. For Carterton, tries were registered by E. Thompson, A. Reading, T. Harp (converted by Brown), and Desmond (converted by Brown). The last try was a nice piece of play. The ball came from the scrum to Tilyarcl, who sent it to Fitzgerald. The latter cut out a couple of his opponents and passed to Hurley, who sent the ball to Thompson. The latter passed to J. Brown, who scored. The kick was a failure. Two penalty goals were kicked by F. Fitzgerald. Mr B. Hurley was referee.

GLADSTONE v GREYTOWN. A DRAWN GAME. The Gladstone-Greytown match resulted in a draw, 6 points each. The teams were well matched and play was fast and open. Gladstone's points came from a try by Compton and a penalty goal kicked by T. Henson. For Greytown, Rex Brunton kicked a penalty and S. Brunton scored a try.
