Mr D. Barnes has been appointed a director of the State Advances Corporation. Pilot Officer A. H. Stubbings, of Masterton, now stationed at Wigram I Aerodrome, has been promoted in I rank to Flying Officer. The following evening students of Wairarapa College were successful in the Electrical Wiremen's examination held last March: Written work, S. J. Faulknor; practical, S. P. Alpe, D. W. Ellison, T. R. Morris, A. E. Read, R. F. Torwick. Among those New Zealand soldiers reported missing are Lance-Sergeant Leslie Solon, formerly manager of the State Theatre at Masterton, and LanceCorporal Arman M. Kjar, of Masterton, who was a playing member of the Red Star Cricket Club. At the annual conference of the Council of the New Zealand Bowling Association at Dunedin yesterday it was decided that in recognition of their services to bowling for 14 years, to present Mr S. M. Stone, Wellington, and Mr H. B. Oakey, Christchurch, with special bars for attaching to their past-presidents’ badges.

News has been received by Mrs G. Daubney, Masterton, that her nephew, Gunner Noel Atkinson, has been posted as missing. Gunner Atkinson, who left with the First Echelon, went through the Greek evacuation and landed in Crete. He was educated at the Wanganui Technical College, was a fully qualified accountant, and a valued member of the Napier branch of the Public Trust. The funeral of the late Mr John McCalmont, Sent - ., took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. Many beautiful wreaths were in evidence, including one from Messrs Graham and Co. The Rev. John Davie officiated, conducting services at the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service, Ltd., and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs B Braggins and L. Larsen (representing the Foresters’ Lodge), M. McCalmont, A. McCalmont (grandsons), F. Dohnt and J. Gallagher. Mr H. P. Stephenson died in Nelson recently as the result of an accident. He was a prominent Freemason and was on his way to a lodge meeting when the accident occurred. He was initiated in Lodge of South Melbourne, No. 81, Victorian Constitution, in 1902; affiliated to Lodge Victory, No. 40, New Zealand constitution, November, 1909; elected Worshipful Master 1917-18; elected Grand Steward. 1930-31; initiated Victory Royal Arch Chapter, No. 12, 1917.
