EKETAHUNA

* BOBBY CALF POOL REPORT OF CHAIRMAN. ("Times-Age" Special.) In presenting his report to the annual meeting of the Eketahuna Bobby Calf Pool, the chairman. Mr C. Connor, stated that as a result of the committee's decision to call tenders for the whole of the calvesHn the pool’s district, the satisfactory price of 9s lOijd per head was realised. The administrative side of the pool had been operated very economically. The total expenses amounted to £2l Os lOd, this including preliminary expenses which occurred in the setting up of the pool. Mr Connor said that he thought the prospects for boneless veal for the coming season were not bright, but the suppliers could rest assured that the committee would do their best to secure the top price offering. He thanked the cartage contractors, Messrs D. P. Ryan and Sons, Ltd., who provided an efficient service. He maintained that a big factor in the successful running of the pool was the co-operation and good will shown at all times by members of the committee. The pool's balance sheet disclosed that the suppliers received £3.572 5s 3d. The statistical table disclosed that the total number of calves collected was 7,221; dead and condemned .at the works, 497. Mr P. Davies drew attention to the large total of 497 dead and condemned calves at the works. This total, he declared, could be considerably reduced if suppliers paid more attention to the feeding of the calves before despatching them to the works. Mr R. Farrow suggested that another cause was the inadequate covering of railway trucks. He thought that if the trucks were covered on the weather side instead of the top as was the rule at present, fewer deaths would be the result. The meeting decided to write to. the Railway Department in respect to the matter.
