GREYTOWN
HOME GUARD FIELD DAY AT PAPA WAI. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Greytown units of the 4th Battalion of the Home Guard held a fielu day at Papawai yesterday. In the morning the engineers’ section constructed a bridge over the Papawai Creek, getting the necessary timber by felling trees near the spot. A wiring party under the direction of Captan Parry, constructed a double apron entanglement. The signalling section was most successful in the operation of a heliograph made by one of their members. In the afternoon the headquarters’ company, under Lieutenant Nisbet, attacked a position held by A Company under the command of Mr S. C. Shedden. Major Greenish, of Wellington, and Mr McKenzie Douglas, area adjutant, were present during the day. The Rev. H. Bloomfield, unit chaplain, conducted a church service at which several ladies were present. Personal Items. Mrs K. Hassall, of Island Bay, is at present visiting her mother, Mrs R. Thomas, Mor'oa. Mrs F. Wise, of Hataitai, is on a visit to Greytown and is staying with her daughter, Mrs J. Robb, East Street. Mr E. Skeet, of Purakau, is at present in the Greytown Hospital. Miss Molly Skeet, of Wellington, was home for the weekend. Miss Maureen O'Connor, of Wellington, spent the weekend with Miss Betty Kiernan. Hockey Notes. The Kia Kaha ladies secured their seventh win on Saturday when they defeated College, but iij.. doing so, failed to keep their goal line intact. For the greater part of the game, the local ladies had a definite territorial advantage, but the College girls put up some very good rushes, and it was from one of these in the last five minutes of the game that a goal was scored. The Kia Kaha combination was not as good as usual. They used their wings to good advantage and their back tackling was good. On their general showing, the local team will be hard to beat provided it can maintain its personnel. The Greytown men’s first round victory over Wesley was avenged by the latter by a goal, but the local team played a very pleasing game for »11 that. Inability to make their circle efforts scoring shots was the reason for their defeat. Against that, however, Wesley is a much improved team, having also beaten Old Boys the previous week, and having run Carterton to a 3-2 score.
The Scouts were unfortunate in having to play short owing to a misunderstanding . Added to that, they were playing a junior team which possessed a good halves and 3 good inside forwards, especially the left inside. Given another full-back, however, the Scouts would not have gone down so easily if at all. They held College at bay until speed, stamina and numbers oegan to tell. For all that, there were serious weaknesses in the Scout team.
