GREYTOWN

NOTED DAIRYING CENTRE SUCCESS OF HERD TESTING. (“Times-Age” Special.) Greytown is steadily improving its position as a dairying centre, and next season there is expected to be a considerable increase in the number of cows in local herds. The testing of cows is progressing satisfactorily, though it is hoped that the number of tested cows will show a substantial increase in the near future. Those wise farmers who have joined the herd testing scheme are reaping the benefit in increased profits. The importance of the dairying industry to Greytown cannot be over emphasised and it is hoped that the day is not far distant when Greytown will double its present, output of dairy produce. Borough Roads. The Borough Council, though hampered by limited funds, is doing its best to keep the footpaths and roads in good order. One can remember the day when the Main Street in Greytown was as bad as the old Wellington-Pe-t.one road, being practically a "sea of mud” after a few days rain. The inhabitants of Greytown today are indeed fortunate that they know not the conditions which existed 40 years or so ago. The ratepayer continually grumbles that the rates are too high, and that this or that thing has not been done by the Council; bilt would he like to revert to the Greytown of the days when bitumen roads were unknown? Borough Council Meetings. The meetings of the Borough Council- in modern times are conducted in a manner that does credit to all concerned, and there is usually little to disturb the smooth running of the municipal machine. Not always has this been the case, as one can recall an occasion when a meeting of the Council resolved itself into a very heated affair and culminated in one councillor throwing a book at the head of the then Mayor, the sequel taking place in the S.M. Court when the councillor concerned was fined for his conduct.
