CARTERTON
RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club’s stewards, held at the secretary’s office last evening, was presided over by Mr W. Howard Booth (president). There were also present: Messrs P. Bain, W. C. Deller, J. C. Harp, V. L. Robinson, E. J. Matsqn, C. Jensen, H. J. Brown, R. G. Kemble and the secretary, Mr H. Mortenson. The treasurer reported a dr. balance at the Bank of New Zealand of £1023. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr F. C. Yule expressing the wish that he would hear good news concerning his son who is reported missing in Greece. The proposed programme of races for the meeting to be held in September was discussed, and, on the motion of the president, seconded by Mr Brown, it was approved. Reference was made to the state in which the racecourse grounds had been left by the military and it was decided that a protest be lodged concerning the holes which had been dug to bury refuse.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PARKVALE MEETING. Mrs W. Adlam (president) presided over the monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women's Institute held in the Parkvale Hall yesterday. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames R. Williams and N. Peacock. The Y.M.C.A., Wellington, wrote inviting members to the soldiers’ Sunday night tea. The invitation was received with thanks. It was decided to postpone the annual "husbands’ night.” The resignations of the president (Mrs Adlam) and the secretary (Miss M. Adlam) were received with regret.. Both will shortly leave the district to reside in Hamilton. A social gathering is to be tendered to Mrs and Miss Adlam on Thursday next by members of r z lhe Institute. An interesting demonstration in the making of lamp shades was given by Mrs M. Wood, of Carterton. and was much appreciated by members. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. ~ Mrs D. Adams read an interesting letter .from her son, who is in the Fleet Air Arm. Two competitions arranged by Mrs W. Adlam and Miss M. Adlam were won by Miss H. McKinnon and Mrs N. McKinnon. The monthly competitions were judged by Mesdames M. Wood and P. Oates, the awards being as follows: Seniors: Eggless fruit cake: Mrs W. Adlam. 1; Mrs L. Rayner. 2; Mrs W. King. 3. Best flower: Mrs L. Rayner, Juniors: Eggless fruit cake: Misses M. Adlam and F. Rayner (equal), 1. Flowers: Miss M. Luckie. 1: Miss S. Rayner, 2. The hostesses were Mrs J. Court and Misses Luckie and E. Martin. Salvation Army. Brigadier and Mrs Charles Hay, of the Salvation Army, will visit Carterton at the weekend and conduct meetings of the A.rmy on Sunday. On Tuesday next Major Chandler, of the Salvation Army will conduct a meeting at the Army barracks. Personal Items. , Mrs W. Nunn and her two sons who have been spending five weeks holiday with Mr and Mrs W. Wadham, Brooklyn Road, Carterton, returned to their home at Waikaremoana yesterday accompanied by Mr Nunn. Election of an Assessor. The nominations of Messrs Robert Bassett and Herbert Mortenson have been received by the Wairarapa South County Clerk, Mr E. T. Beaven. As - the number of candidates exceeds the T number cf vacancies to be filled a meeting of ratepayers of the county will be held at the P. and A. Society’s buildings on Friday next at 2 p.m. for the purpose of electing one assessor. Racehorse Trainer Arrives. . / Mr T. R. George and the horses under his charge arrived at the Carterton racecourse today. The horses numbering twenty, will be quartered throughout the winter months at Clareville. Returned Soldiers’ Ball. The members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association will hold their annual ball in the King’s Theatre on Monday, July 7. A number of debutantes will be presented to the Mayoress (Mrs D. L. Taverner). Presentation to Mr Geo. Brown. Junr. Mr Geo. Brown. Junr.. who has been on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand for some years, left the bank’s service yesterday and will enter the Air Force camp'at Levin on Sunday. Prior to severing his connection with the bank Mr C. C. Callender, on behalf of the staff in an appropriate speech, presented Mr Brown with a hold-all. JVIr Brown suitably returned thanks.
