BONFIRE ASHES
TAKE CARE OF THEM. When one has a good heap of bonfire ashes they are worth taking care of, especially in view of the present shortage of potash. Do not leave them to be saturated by rain. Gather them up and place them in safe keeping under cover. When the time comes to sow seeds of onions, carrots, turnips or spinach a dusting of these ashes will help the seedlings to get a fair start. Any not required for such a purpose will render good service if placed be-
tween layers of rubbish when making the compost heap. We do not advise the burning of good, soft green vegetation which will decompose and make rich compost, but we would rather burn anything infested with the eggs of insects or spores of disease than risk their survival to get back among next season's crops.
