MARTINBOROUGH

BOROUGH COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinbcrough Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr C. R. Holmes), Crs C. W. Skill, W. H. Corfield, G. P. Cotter. F. Gray. L. J. Sievers, T. C. Hamilton and Mr. N. Hardie. An apology for absence was received from Cr. M. Mulvaney. The following committees were appointed: Works, Crs. Skill (chairman). Grey, Hardie, and Blissett; lighting, Crs Cotter (chairman), Corfield, and Mulvaney; Town Hall. Crs. Cotter (chairman). Sievers, and Mulvaney; Library. Crs Hamilton (chairman), and Sievers; Parks, the Mayor, Deputy Mayor. and the Works Committee; Rates, the Mayor, treasurer, and Cr. Skill. A letter was received from Mr M. R. Smith stating that he wished to purchase the old fire bell. It was decided to reply that the bell was not for sale. The Queenstown County Council wrote asking the council to support a request to the Government to abolish the 40-hour week. The letter was received.

The Patriotic Committee wrote asking the council to appoint a representative to the annual meeting this month. Cr. Sievers was appointed. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Power Board asking the cooperation of the council in connection with the restricted use of power during the winter months. The request was agreed to.

The Crippled Children Society wrote asking for financial support. It was decided to make a grant of £5. The Works Committee reported that chips had been procured for sealing the streets and general work carried out.

The Hall Committee reported that the borer was strongly in evidence. The ranger reported having dealt with four head of stock and registered 18 dogs during the month. The tender of Messrs George and George was accepted for metalling the streets.
