CARTERTON
HOME GUARD ALL DAY PARADE. (“Times-Age” Special.) . The B Company of the Carterton JHome Guard had its first all-day par- ' ade on Sunday. The Company fell in in the P. and A. grounds where Chaplain Daglish conducted a short service. It then marched into the country for practice in field exercises and all sections were tried out with section stalking, fire orders, indication of targets, judging distance, etc. The .Company returned to the Kings Theatre where hot tea was provided. Word was then received that the enemy had landed “paratroops'’ in the paddocks of Mr W. H. Booth and these had occupied the woolshed and farm buildings 'on his property. Operations were then carried out according to plan. Captain Wakelin watched the operation and in addressing the Company afterwards commented very favourably on the work ‘and particularly on the efficient way in which the section leaders and platoon commanders handled their men, etc. The Company Commander complimented the Company on its work, and said that the extra time and training undertaken by officers and N.C.O's. had clearly born fruit.
WOMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Masonic Hall when Mrs Ordish presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Couper, Taplin, Hall, Swan, Mellish and Miss Thompson. A donation of £5 towards the Rest Room fund was handed in from Mr G. W. Hart. A letter was received from the Navy League asking for knitted goods and ditty.»bags. 11-’iwas decided, that the proceeds from the social club birthday party to •be held at the end of the month should be spent in. buying Wool, and that £1 should be taken, from the funds to buy material to make ditty bags. Several members volunteered to do this work. A roll call, “Your Christian name and what you would have liked it to be.” caused much amusement. The monthly competitions resulted as follows: —Knitted scarf: Mrs Binns, 1; Mrs Renall, 2; Mrs Card. 3 . Best) bloom: Mrs Allen, 1 and 2; Mrs Couper. 3. Best shrub: Mrs Allen, 1 and 3; Mrs Couper, 2. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Stretton. The competition for next month is to be the best gingerbread. The entries are to be sent to the Wellington Y.M.C.A. The hostesses were Mesdames Rabbits. Harrington and Thompson. RETURNED SOLDIERS ANNUAL MEETING.
There was an attendance of 70 members of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. at the annual meeting held in the Band Room last eevning. The president. Mr A. T. Murray, presided. The annual report and statement of accounts were read and adopted. The report showed that 1269 poppies had been sold by the ladies of the Women’s Institute, realising £65 9s. Votes of thanks were accorded to the members of the Women's Institute for their work on Poppy Day; the ladies' committee for the annual ball; members of the Savage Club; the Wairarapa executive, especially Mr Prentice; the Carterton blanch secretary. Mr A. G. Rabbitts; the Borough Council: the Municipal Band; the Pipe Band; the '•Times-Age,” and the citizens c’. Carterton and district for their; loyal support. ; The following committee was elected for the ensuing year:—Messrs C. A. | Chennells, A. G. Rabbits. C. C. Cai-1 lender. F. H. Taplin, A. T. Murray. H. J. Rathbone, L. J. Harding, H. J. McKenzie, P. L. Beere and C. Manley. The election of president and other officers will take place at the first meeting of the committee. The members were afterwards entertained at supper. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr E. Dyer for auditing the books. Among those present were Mr H. J. Brass, president of the Wairarapa R.S.A., and the secretary. Mr A. E. Prentice.
ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. There was a fair attendance of members at the fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows held last evening. Progress reports •were received regarding two members who are undergoing treatment in hospital. A member resident at Heretaunga wrote stating that his wife had entered the Wellington Hospital for medical treatment. Sick pay to the amount of £7 10s and other accounts totalling £8 5s 8d were passed for payment. The retiring 1.P.N.G.. P.G. Sister Eagle, was thanked for her services while passing through the chairs of the lodge for a second term, and her name) was ordered to be placed upon the Honours Board. The newly elected lodge officers were installed into office for the ensuing six months, and were accorded lodge honours.
Home and School Association. I At the fortnightly ”500" evening held m the Band Room under the auspices of the Home and School Association, the prizes were won as follows:—Ladies: Mesdames Patterson. 1; Ovens. 2. Men: Messrs Jackson, 1; Patterson, 2. Man Power Committee. An adjournment sine die was granted by the Wairarapa Man Power Committee at a sitting in Carterton yesterday in respect to an appeal relating to Territorial service, lodged by Mrs Louisa Ann Rose on behalf of her son, James William David Rose, dairy farm manager. The appeal was lodged on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. Wool to be Purchased. At the weekly card party held by the local branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, it was announced that the proceeds of the next card party would be set aside for the purchase of wool for the purpose of knitting garments lor the men of the British Mercantile Marine. Personals. At the social gathering tendered to soldiers and Sister Una Goodin at Carterton on Friday night, a presentation of a woollen jacket was made by Mrs 11. Hodder to Sister Goodin on behalf of the W.D.F.U. Mr and Mrs P. Johansen, Carterton. have received a cable message from their son. Captain Johansen, that he is fit and well in Egypt after havinghad a strenuous time in Greece. Mi- A. G. Rabbitts has returned to his home after having been a patient in the Masterton Hospital.
