PUNISHING BLOWS
STRUCK AT ENEMY BASES IN NORTH AFRICA BENGHAZI & DERNA AGAIN BOMBED. FIGHTERS ALSO BUSY. LONDON, June 9. In Africa furtlier heavy blows have been struck by the R.A.F. against enemy sea and air bases. This afternoon’s Cairo communique reports a successful, attack on Beg'hazi, one of the enemy’s main supply bases for forces in North Africa. Two attacks were made and a number of fires followed by explosions occurred on the two principal moles in the harbour.
The aerodrome at Derna was also attacked and two more enemy planes were destroyed on the ground. A number of planes were destroyed there on the previous night. Other aerodromes also felt the weight of our bombers and considerable damage was caused 'to landing grounds. Fighters have been busy and yesterday maintained''active patrols over Cyrenaica and made no contact with the enemy. Not one of our aircraft is missing from widespread operations in the Middle East. No change is reported in the situation on land in Libya. In Saturday night’s raid on Malta an Italian bomber was shot down in flames. An unidentified plane was so severely damaged that the crew baled out. There were no casualties or damage on the island.
