The “New York Times” Chungking correspondent says developments here indicate that the Japanese may soon launch a new major offensive in Central China. The Japanese forces in Hupeh have been reinforced and additional reinforcements are continuing to reach Hankow. The Japanese are making an effort to wipe out an important guerilla base in the mountains in Southern Hupeh. CHUNGKING BOMBED 1 700 PERSONS SUFFOCATED IN TUNNEL. JAMMED ENTRANCES BLOCK VENTILATION'. (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) CHUNGKING. June 6. Japanese bombers dropped flares, after which they set fire to the down town shopping area. A dozen bombs hit the Press hostel compound, startint; two fires. It is officially stated that 700 persons were suffocated in a supposedly bomb-proof tunnel, when four entrances, overcrowded with people, prevented ventilation.
