FEATHERSTON

FAREWELL GATHERING TO WELL KNOWN KAHUTARA RESIDENT. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of Kahutara Women’s Institute, the W.D.F.U.. Ladies' Guild, and other friends yesterday afternoon met to bid farewell to Mrs Rogers, who is leaving the district to reside in Otaki. During the afternoon Mesdames Connell and Farquhar contributed items which were much enjoyed. Competitions organised by Mesdames Duffy and Elbe were won by Mrs Ness and Miss Corlet. A community sing was led by Mesdames Farquhar and Connell. Mrs McKenna, on behalf of those present, presented Mrs Rogers with a handbag accompanied by ? r their best wishes. Mrs Ross spoke on behalf of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs Elbe asked Mrs Rogers to accept a posy from Women's Institute members and Mrs Ross presented her with a shoulder spray. Mrs Juno, on behalf of the Ladies’ Guild, handed Mrs Rogers a posy. The serving of afternoon tea brought to a conclusion a very enjoyable gathering.

Personal. Miss Esma Card is visiting her sister Mrs R. McKenzie, Ballance. Womens War Seiwice. The enrolments for the Women’s War eSrvice Auxiliary are steadity continuing and a strong and enthusiastic class for transport work has been formed under the tutorship of Mr P. H. Wilton. The class will begin next Thursday at 7.30 p.m. As soon as possible all the younger girls will be given instruction in cycling and signalling. All women interested in forming a squad for drill in Featherston are asked to attend at the Drill Hall on Tuesday, June 3; at'6.45 p.m. Girls 16 years of age and over arc particularly asked to be present. Drilling and carrying out physical exercises will be definitely a war effort, as no woman can do her best in any emergency unless she is physically fit.

Van dalism. On several occasions lately Native trees and shrubs on the section owned by Messrs Mellish Bros, at the foot of the Rimutaka Hill have been destroyed.
