PECULIAR LEGISLATIVE PROVISION. IMPRISONMENT OF COMPANY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. I “I don’t understand how any Court I can sentence a company to imprisonment,” said Mr E. C. Levvey, in the (Magistrate's Court today, when Aulsebrook and Company were charged with employing a reservist not enrolled in the National Reserve. The Magistrate pointed out that the Act gave the company the right to be [tried by jury, but when that right was.not claimed the company could be (dealt with summarily and a fine of £lOO or twelve months’ imprisonment {could be imposed by a magistrate, j _ ‘ The Act has Ihe extraordinary oflect of making a limited liability company liable to imprisonment," said Mr Levvey. “That is so now. that I. am al. a loss to understand it.” He pointed out that it the company wore sentenced to imprisonment, it could apply for a writ, of Habeaus Corpus, which imi doubtedly would be granted, and (he whole thing, would be a nullity. Under the circumstances it would be’stultifying to impose any term of imprisonment on any company or officers of! a company." I The case was then adjourned for a week.
